The Art of Not Getting Hit
Having studied traditional martial arts for nearly a quarter century,
I've been exposed to more ways to block a punch than I could possibly
remember. Of the dozens of blocks I practiced so diligently over the
years, there aren't many I'd bet on when the fists start flying for
real. While no one has ever won a fight or taken a suspect into custody
with a purely defensive response, it would be foolish to assume there
isn't a need for defensive tactics. Clearly, being able to block or
parry an incoming strike is...

What You Really Need
There are an increasing number of articles in the
various "police" magazines, touting various tools that police officers
supposedly need to do their jobs. Of course, it is no coincidence that
the makers of these "necessities" have full page ads in close proximity
to the articles, but hey, that's just business. Law Officer Magazine
believes that you need to make objective judgments about what you

The Evolution of Security Threat Groups into the Twenty-First Century - Part I
It is hard to believe that it has been almost
thirty years since the first “formal” Gang Intelligence Units were
formed. Through the years, Gang Intelligence Units have developed the
knowledge, skills, and abilities to manage Security Threat Groups
within correctional institutions.
As the influence of ‘formal’ prison gangs and
other groups became clear to correctional professionals, they initiated
gang management techniques. They gained gang intelligence and
disseminated it to the administration and line staff; they monitored
housing and working assignments of gang members; and, they identified
and validated gang members and leaders.
It was the Gang Intelligence Units that “coined”
the term “Security Threat Groups.” It became clear to the Gang
Intelligence Units that more than...read more
